Everyday intentions

Niyyah for leaving home: a good intention

I leave my home in the name of Allah, trusting Him with my day.

A good niyyah for leaving home

Bismillah at the door. The Prophet ﷺ taught that whoever says “In the name of Allah, I put my trust in Allah” on leaving home is guided and protected (Sunan Abi Dawud 5095).

Head out to do good. Work, school, the shop or the mosque: set your intention as you step out, and the day’s ordinary errands count (Sahih al-Bukhari 1).

One lasting gift is water: build a water well and see it finished. See which charities have a 100% donation policy, and how each one pays its costs.

Habits that go with it

Small sunnahs around the act.

  • Greet the people you meet with salam: spreading it brings love between believers (Sahih Muslim 54).
  • Remove something harmful from the road if you see it: that too is sadaqah (Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi 1956).

Bismillah, tawakkaltu ‘alallah

In the name of Allah. I put my trust in Allah, and there is no power and no strength except through Allah.

Said on leaving home. The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever says it is told: you are guided, you are looked after and you are protected; and the devil turns away from him.
