Everyday intentions

Niyyah for getting dressed: a good intention

I dress with thanks to Allah, to be modest, clean and presentable.

A good niyyah for getting dressed

Thanks, before you leave the room. The Prophet ﷺ taught words of praise for putting on a garment, thanking Allah who provided it (Sunan Abi Dawud 4023).

Modest and presentable. Dressing to be decent and to look after yourself, for Allah rather than for show, is counted by intention (Sahih al-Bukhari 1).

A small amount goes a long way: give sadaqah and follow it to the people it reaches. Some charities say every pound reaches the cause: see what a 100% donation policy means.

Habits that go with it

Small sunnahs around the act.

  • Say the dua when you put on something new or something you love (Sunan Abi Dawud 4023).
  • Give away what you no longer wear: every act of kindness is sadaqah (Sahih al-Bukhari 6021).

Alhamdu lillahil-ladhi kasani hadha

All praise belongs to Allah, who has clothed me with this (garment) and given it to me, with no power or strength of my own.

Said when getting dressed.
